SMEStorage release Mac Cloud Drive beta 4 for up to 10 Storage Clouds

London, United Kingdom – SMEStorage, the multi-cloud data access provider, has released the fourth beta of a Mac Cloud Drive which enables up to 10 commercial storage providers to be accessed directly from a virtual drive in Mac Leopard and Snow Leopard Operating Systems.

CEO Ian Osborne states, “We are really pleased to announce the fourth and most robust beta of our virtual cloud drive for the Mac. This drive enables users to access their cloud storage files directly from their shell or Mac file manager”

“We have completely re-written huge parts of the drive in this beta to deal with the nuances of Mac Finder. The result is a huge step forward in our goal of having a robust multi-cloud drive for the Mac OSX. The drive now supports the encryption features of our gateway which can overlay any cloud, as well as giving the ability to generate a URL directly from the desktop.”

“The term ‘Cloud Gateway’ is now becoming a recognized term and we believe we are only at the very beginning of users accessing their data in the cloud directly from the desktop rather than storing data on disparate internal servers. Key to an organizations data strategy in the future will be ‘Access Anywhere Anytime’”.

“Supporting the Mac is a key part of our strategy to enable a robust cloud-to-desktop- environment on WIndows, Mac and Linux and having a client that works on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry”.

“The next beta will continue the hardening of the offering and will incorporate sync-to-desktop above all the clouds we support”

In this way SMEStorage can offer value added services and clients to existing cloud storage providers, whilst also providing a single cloud file system which enables files from many different cloud storage providers to be managed in one cloud file tree. SMEStorage provide services to individual users, and also to corporate users via its Organisation Cloud platform offering, which combines file sharing, user management and collaboration features. Jahia’s Garcin: Open Source Software is the better option for Cloud Computing

“The cloud might be a deal breaker for many software companies, either from a licensing standpoint or because their software is not extensible.”

We sat down with Emmanuel Garcin, Vice President & General Manager of Jahia Inc., in Washington, DC to discuss the open source CMS Cloud offering.

Hi Emmanuel, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. In a recent release Jahiastated it has experienced a growing acceptance for hosted web content management, even among conservative industries like banking and finance, for both corporate websites and Intranet projects. Why is not everyone using the cloud?

Emmanuel Garcin: Some companies still have financial incentives to own their datacenter It really depends on the financial structure of the firm. Some prefer hardware that you can depreciate, in order to maximize tax deductions [CAPEX versus OPEX]. Most of our Cloud clients prefer to expense [OPEX] their web initiative spendings.

When discussing the cloud option with new or existing clients, what kind of concerns do you hear the most?

Emmanuel Garcin: Different types of customers have different reasons for looking at our cloud offerings. SMBs with low IT resources don’t want to spend on infrastructure. Large enterprises with datacenters still want the flexibility of the cloud, for example, to reach a new region. Thanks to Amazon, we have computing power all over the world. Companies also may want to get faster to market and bypass the  internal IT/datacenter processes which can be heavy and time consuming.

However, both types of customers hesitate to trust others to administer and secure their systems because they want to be able to monitor and back up the cloud themselves. Their concern is always the same:  What do we do when it’s down? Salesforce.com had the same hesitation in the early adoption phase. In our experience, Jahias’s automatic monitoring, security and backup option is often the selling argument.

Nivio: A Cloud Computer for US$75

With Cloud computing on everyone’s lips in Taiwan, Computex, Sachin Duggal of Nivio introduces his Nivio Cloud PC – a computer hosted in the cloud.

He aims to change the economics of computers by renting software to subsidize the hardware, while maintaining a quality experience. The beauty of this model, Duggal says, is that you can access your desktop on the go, on any computer in the world.

You rent the latest apps (as well as Windows) from the cloud. (For anyone curious about “The Cloud” it is all about keeping things out in the Internet rather than based in your computer.)

The price? Duggal gives an example from India where the box and all the basic services will cost you US$75 for the box and US$20 a month for Windows, cost of broadband and online storage.

Duggal promises all your data is kept safe, even if you fail to pay your fees. But you might experience a lockout if you go beyond your paid limit.

But this model will not only benefit the consumer; Duggal sees a brighter future for all ecosystem partners:

- The software companies are facing huge problems with piracy and the cheap new model could help that.
- Nivio will not produce the hardware themselves, but license it out to external hardware companies.
- Telecom operators will benefit as everything is hosted in the cloud.

This system – and the cloud – has interesting implications for apps. If apps are stored on the cloud, would you buy or download them? Easier to rent them.

Rumor: Cloud based iTunes coming June 7th.

First, Apple buys Lala, then Apple closes Lala.  This move left tongues wagging about the idea of cloud-based streaming.  Then, with some of the more in depth feature reveals for iPhone OS 4, it got the tech geeks in a brainstorm.

Wired is reporting that the rumor mill might not be so far off base.  Here’s why iTunes in the Cloud makes a lot of sense:

  • Current owners of older devices would have a blazingly good reason to want to upgrade.  Hello more sales?
  • Apple has owned Lala for nearly 6 months.  That’s plenty of time for the company to integrate it into a more viable format than just on-demand streaming.

For now, we’ll wait and see.  Of course Apple won’t comment, because it’s all speculation for now.  But the WWDC is just around the corner, and June 7th is set to be a big day whether iTunes is on Cloud 9 or not.

SugarSync: 2 Petabytes and Counting – Welcome to the Personal Cloud

SugarSync: 2 Petabytes and Counting - Welcome to the Personal Cloud.jpgSugarSync is one of several companies competing these days to benefit from the disruptions in the market created by the new ways that people organize and share information from the any number of devices they use in their day.

That’s a fundamental shift that is happening as people move beyond the desktop as a place to keep their documents, their media and their productivity applications.

Sponsor

Services like SugarSync serve in many ways as personal clouds that people use for their own work. They seem like plain vanilla services but that as well is the benefit the services provide. They are very simple to use. Data is automatically backed up to the cloud.

SugarSync’s latest hosting numbers are revealing as they demonstrate how much data people are storing online.

SugarSync reports that in the past year, the amount of data added to the SugarSync data centers went from an average of 1 terabyte of data to 5 terabytes of information. In total, the company now hosts two petaybtes of information.

What’s fueling this growth? The customers may provide some clue. About 33 percent of customers are from outside the United States. Mobile devices are far more predominant outside the U.S. It makes sense that people would need an alternative place to store infromation besides their smart phone or netbook.

In light of the booming mobile device market, SugarSync, Dropbox and a host of other services are companies that seem like it would make most sense to develop mobile apps. That appears to be true. In the past 18 months, Sugar Sync has released apps for the Android, BlackBerry and iPad.

Services like SugarSync show how the data we create will become part of a personal cloud network. These services lay the grounwork for a new generation of personal and business offerings that work with users to create data as a service opportunities.

That’s down the road a bit but people do want so share. And they want to share outside the borders of a social network. Personal clouds could be a means to do that.

Gartner Hype Cycle 2009 – Is Cloud Computing Over Hyped?

I came across this interesting white paper – Hype Cycle of Emerging Technologies, 2009 published by Gartner Inc. This paper describes the emerging technology trends and how are these technologies performing in the year 2009. The hype cycle is divided into 5 phases based on their conception and market adoption.

So, what is so interesting about a Hype Cycle?! Here is how wikipedia describes it:

A hype cycle is a graphic representation of the maturity, adoption and business application of specific technologies. The term was coined by Gartner, an analyst/research house based in the United States that provides opinions, advice and data on the global information technology industry.

They come up with many Hype cycles on various markets every year (which are not free of course $$, that’s how they make money!).

The most interesting thing I came across is at the peak of the hype cycle is the most talked about topic these days, cloud computing. According to Garther, cloud computing is the most hyped technology of year 2009.

The above graph is divided into 5 phases;

1. Technology Trigger - Now, this is the phase when a new technology evolves and has a chance of becoming one of the main stream technologies of the future. Some of the technology triggers of 2009 according to Gartner are – 3D flat panel displays, Quantum computing and Human Augmentation. I personally think these stuff will take a very long time to develop, especially Human Augmentation!

:-) 2. Peak of inflated expectation: Now here comes the interesting part! The 2nd phase has those technologies which are over hyped and have unrealistic expectations! On top of this peak is Cloud Computing and E-book readers! I wonder what Amazon has to say about that, since they are one of the biggest players of the “cloud” and also of the e-book readers, the Kindle! Can’t help mentioning the “cloud” OS – Google Chrome OS and Jolicloud.

3. Trough of Disillusionment: This phase covers those technologies which failed to live up to their expectations! One of the biggest looser which I see here is RFID! But RFID still has a long way to go. Gartner think RFID is on a slow and steady growth and it might catch up other technologies in the next phase, the Slope of Enlightenment in 5-10 years.

4. Slope of Enlightenment: This phase covers one of the most promising technologies of tomorrow which have become a part of our lives but we haven’t actually started to tap its potential. Biggest example is Twitter! Some of the technologies in this phase are Web 2.0 (Its every where!), social network analysis (FaceBook plans to do that), over the air mobile phone system (Jack Dorsey is doing that). From where I see, these technologies have really gained some solid ground and have a promising future ahead!

5. Plateau of Productivity: Well, the final phase consists of those technologies which are already proven to be a breakthrough in technology and is broadly accepted by various markets. The year 2009 does not have any technologies in the 5th phase, though speech recognition is inching towards the 5th phase. Last year, web services was in this category and presently in the year 2009, virtually all the major websites run some kind of web services and the enterprise systems depend heavily on web services!
