Is the world ready for yet another smartphone platform? Probably not – but it’s got until June to get prepped. According to Samsung, that’s when they’ll be launching the Wave, their first phone to be powered by Bada.
The good word comes after a handful of UK retailers started promising that Wave pre-orders would be filled in the next few weeks, implying that the handset would drop in April or May. Check out Samsung’s statement after the jump.
The comment from a Samsung Spokesperson, which was sent to TechRadar this morning: “The Samsung Wave is not currently available for sale in the UK, but we look forward to its launch in June 2010, at which time details of tariffs and stockists will be released by our operator partners.”
So what do you think? Are you dying to ride the Wave?

Thanks for the heads up Eric….that’s what I don’t like. So what OPEN platforms have less restrictions and will have phones for it that allow you to change your own battery? If the only answer is Android then are we safe to replace Android with 3rd party derivatives that remove the Google apps?
While typing this, I did a search for mobile OS and it looks like there is or will be Maemo, MeeGo, and Limo – but I have not seen this on Smartphone options lately, nor do I know their restricton levels. Am I just going to have to jailbreak a phone and hope my mobile company does not notice?
@TR: If you don’t like Apple’s restriction, you won’t like Bada as well as both have very similar restrictions, including the approval process before being able to deploy an application.
Samsung has for its market share to make the platform attractive for developers I guess (despite quite buggy SDK for now).
Very nice phone for samsung platform.
A fresh approach is needed on this forsaken non delivering smart phone market and another open platform could turn events.
Samsung is modest enough with a platform to deliver without the hoopla going around it .
At least its ready to roll.
I am all for this new open platform. I do not like Iphone app restrictions nor the battery restrictions; and I do not like Android being implemented by Google (just don’t like ‘em that’s all). But I want to use an open-system, so this may be an option for me. Or I will get an Adroid based phone and load a 3rd party platform that removes Google apps. I read about WebOS a while back and another one (I forget the name) – just waiting for the right one – maybe this is it. I will watch the release and see what initial issues it has. Thanks for the article.
I guess that there is a roughly fixed number of OSes in the market.
WebOS is about to die and Bada enters. It remains to be seen though if Bada offers anything though.
No. Honestly with the new direction Windows Phone 7 is going I really think that the iPhone and Android are the two winners here. BlackBerry will likely hold onto legacy customers, for a while and some customers might migrate from Windows Mobile 6.x to 7 but I just don’t see room for Web OS, Bada or anything else unless they can find/create a “killer app”.
